Anti-Racism

Bishop Childs - An Anti-Racist School

We are working together to deliver Welsh Government's Anti-racist Wales Action Plan;

to build an inclusive and equitable society for all.

The uncomfortable truth is that deeply rooted racial inequalities are experienced by Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic people in Wales. We aim to confront systemic injustices and work collectively towards meaningful change.

We want to make sure that all staff and pupils feel safe, respected, and represented regardless of background. We are actively working to promote diversity and to embed anti-racist practices.

What is anti-racism?

Anti-racism moves beyond the promotion of equality and diversity and ‘not being racist’ to actively opposing racism and being an advocate for individual, institutional and systemic change.

What are we working on?

We recognise that there is much work to be done.

Our senior leaders, governors and teachers are committed to professional learning and personal growth in this area. We are working together to challenge and critically evaluate ourselves.

We are modelling behaviours that engender a culture of honesty at all levels, however difficult such conversations may be.

We aim to listen to Global Majority learners in our school as well as read about the lived experiences of Global Majority people.

Our aims

We aim to ensure that:

* all alleged racist incidents are dealt with within an agreed and co-constructed process, and communicate that we are doing so with involved parties.

* all staff are able to deliver anti-racism education following a racist incident and that all incidents include an education element and/or inform curriculum planning.

* we are aware of unconcious bias.

* our school environment is representative of and for all of our learners.

* we involve parents/carers and the community in whole school events where possible.

* our learners question what they see and hear in the media, in our locality and even in our school and do not accept racism and inequality.

* we develop a curriculum that meets the varied and diverse needs of our pupils and the demands of the world that they live in, including their own and others' identity and culture.
