Cwtch 5 - Summer Term Update 30.03.2023

Cardiff Castle Trip 22.03.23

Spring 2 Visual Curriculum Map

This half term we are learning about post-war Wales. We will be researching, discussing and answering the question "Why do people hold different views about the modernisation of an area?" Below is a copy of our visual curriculum map which outlines what we will be learning and how each Area of Learning links to our Big Question.

We loved our visit to Cardiff Castle, exploring the Air Raid shelter, walking around the castle, and even getting all the way to the top!

Nahla took part in a swim meet in Tiger Bay this weekend for City of Cardiff swim club and placed second. Nahla brought in her medal, t-shirt, hoody and swim hat to show in class and in Celebration Worship on Friday. Congratulations Nahla!

Red Nose Day - we all dressed up as a ‘Little Miss’ or ‘Mr Men’ character.

We have researched Stephen Hawking this half term and we created information sheets with everything we learnt using ‘Freeform’ on the iPads.

Isla performed in ‘Matilda’ this weekend and brought in her programme to show the class. She enjoyed telling everyone all about the show.

Georgia won the Faith and Values competition for the Eisteddfod closing prayer, congratulations Georgia!

World Book Day aims to encourage children to read 10 minutes a day, so we came dressed up as our favourite book characters to celebrate reading and completed a 10 minute readathon in class.

We had a brilliant Eisteddfod!

Spring 1 Visual Curriculum Map

This half term our topic is WWII. We will be researching, discussing and answering the question "What lessons can we learn about resilience from the war time generation?" Below is a copy of our visual curriculum map which outlines what we will be learning and how each Area of Learning links to our Big Question.

We completed our ‘Cycle Training’ this week. We had a brilliant week learning all about bike safety and improving our cycling skills.

Our final performance of the ‘Jac Y Do’ for Eisteddfod.

We had our last few sessions of ‘Walk Through the Bible’ with Louise. We loved learning the stories from the Old Testament and getting the opportunity to act them out.

Amelia-Rose and Olivia-Leigh took part in a cheerleading competition on Sunday. Amelia-Rose brought in her t-shirt and medal to show everyone. Gwaith Gwych!

Roseanna came first in her gymnastics competition this weekend and brought her medal in to show everyone! Bendegedig Roseanna!

Urban Landscapes - Our Locality

There's no better way to start a topic about urban landscapes than going to see some for ourselves . St Mellons provides some of the best views in Cardiff and we couldn't resist a walk to see them. During the 1930s and 1940s, St Mellons was very rural and had very little attention from the German bombers. It would have been, however, a perfect place to see the terrifying view of the bombs landing on the city and coastal industries that were dotted along the coast line.

Royal Welsh Museum Trip 26.01.2023

We had our third 'Walk Through the Bible' session this Wednesday, where we learnt all about Moses.

We had our second ‘Walk Through the Bible’ session with Louise this Monday. We enjoyed acting out the story of Rachel, Leah and Jacob and Joseph.

We are writing poems this term. We have looked at lots of different poems about World War Two and discussing what vocabulary we liked and wanted to use in our own poems.

Why were some areas of Wales bombed more than others?

Dylan brought in a bullet from a museum to show the class. We enjoyed passing it around and having a look, diolch Dylan!

We had our first ICE Wales session today with Louise where we learnt about some key stories from the Bible, focused around the Old Testament. We had a brilliant time and we really enjoyed role playing some of the stories! We are looking forward to seeing Louise again next week for our next session.

Tobi very kindly brought in some World War Two memorabilia to share with us. We enjoyed looking at the range of items. Diolch Tobi!

To kickstart our World War Two topic this half term, we have been reading 'The Valley of Lost Secrets' by Lesley Parr. We have begun following the journey of Jimmy and Ronnie, two evacuees who have moved to the Welsh valleys from London. We are excited to see where the story takes us.

This term, we are learning the Jac Y Do in preparation for Eisteddfod on 1st March.

PS3 had a mixing day to introduce our new topic all about World War 2. In Miss Gwilym’s classroom, we learnt about evacuation and how it impacted children's lives. In Miss Ramsay’s classroom, we learnt about rationing and how much food people were allowed to have during the war. In Mr McCarthy’s classroom, we made the classroom a blackout, to experience how people would have felt during the war.

Cwtch Pump had a brilliant time at the Cricket tournament. Our red team came in second place and we had a brilliant day playing cricket, touring the museum and visiting the 'away' changing rooms.

In Jigsaw this half term, we are looking at ‘Dreams and Goals’. We have started talking about what we might want to be when we grow up and how we can aim for these goals. We have lots of future lawyers, FBI agents, dancers, singers, football players, swimming coaches and cheer captains!

Homework for this term

Having fun at the Christmas fair! Thank you to Miss Callow and everyone who made it such a lovely day, we had a wonderful time!

Play Together - Disability Sport Wales

Play Together is a creative inclusive learning programme aimed at primary school pupils in Year 5 across Wales. It aims to challenge perceptions of disabled people and show children how to include different impairments in physical activity. We completed the Play Together workshop. We were shown wheelchairs built specifically for sport and we were introduced to equipment made for people with disabilities, such as a ball with bells in the middle for people who have impaired vision. Thank you to Huw and the rest of the Disability Sport Wales team, we had a brilliant time learning how to be more inclusive when we play.

Our pyjama day for Children in Need.

For PE this half term, one of our focuses is Yoga. We have been learning how to meditate and how to do some Yoga poses and lunges.

We have launched Time Table Rockstars and Numbots in our class this term. We have been logging in to complete stories, challenges and learn our times tables.

Writing a Diary Entry

For our third writing genre this year, we are focusing on writing a diary entry. We have been thinking carefully about our emotions, and we wrote about a significant event to us.

Practising our Rugby passes.

Wear Red to Show Racism the Red Card Day

Natural Portraits

We learned about the artist, Giuseppe Arcimboldo and the designer, Justina Blakeny. We used them as inspiration for our own natural portraits. It was a little windy but, despite that, we embraced the challenge and used our knowledge of facial features to choose material and position it accordingly.

School Trip to RWCMD & Cardiff Castle

In Jigsaw this half term, we have been learning about how children learn, within our community and across the world. We pass Jigsaw Jez around to discuss our thoughts. This week, we were discussing how people can learn when working in groups, so we built towers out of our equipment on our tables and evaluated how well we worked together.

Using the tag rugby belts for the first time!

We had 'Shocktober' visit and teach us some life-saving skills.

Nahla and Ayaan spotted lots of bugs and small creatures at lunch, so created a ‘bug hotel’ in the KS2 yard!

This term in PE, we are learning how to play Tag Rugby. We have been focusing on learning key skills, such as throwing, catching and dodging.

Writing an Information Sheet

For our second writing genre this year, we are focusing on creating an information sheet. We have been looking at facts and opinions, as well as categorising information in order of importance.

Writing Instructions

For our first writing genre this year, we have been looking at how to write effective instructions for a playground game. In preparation for this, we played lots of different games. For example, Grandma's keys, Hot potato, Heads down/thumbs up and Stuck in the mud.

Our Inspiration - Mariusz Kedzierski

Showing Emotions

We've learned that emotions can be expressed on people's faces. These expressions can help us deal with different situations in an appropriate way. Reading people's faces can help us to build friendships, be empathetic and help people to share their feelings.

We've looked at some of Marusz Kedzierski's portraits and tried to describe the specific emotions that are demonstrated in each one. We've also explained why we've come to these conclusions. This will help us represent our own emotions when we are drawing our own portraits.

Drawing a Simple Face

We found out that drawing a 'simple' face isn't actually as 'simple' as you might think! We learned a few tricks to help us draw the proportions of the face accurately. Some of these proportions were surprising. Did you know that your eyes were approximately half way down your face? And this was just the first thing we needed to consider ...
